TOTAL E&P UK extracts value from geological and geophysical data with Iron Mountain

Ten-year contract with Iron Mountain allows Total E&P UK to optimise the value of its information assets.

Date: 17 Feb 2012

TOTAL E&P UK (TEP UK) has signed a ten-year contract with global information management company Iron Mountain Incorporated  to manage, protect and maintain its geological, geophysical and general data. Iron Mountain will help TEP UK preserve its physical information assets, including core samples, seismic sections, surveys, maps, and exploration reports, to preserve their value and comply with Government regulations. They will also manage TEP UK’s digital tape media.

In a heavily regulated industry, Iron Mountain will help TEP UK manage their information for compliance and sustainability purposes, supporting them in delivering relevant information to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), the Common Data Access Ltd (CDA) and releasing information as required.

“TEP UK creates vast amounts of information which needs to be maintained for the long term. Given the volume, complexity and nature of the data we have, it is not optimal for us to do this in-house.” explains Ton Ruijgrok, TEP UK. “By continuing to work with Iron Mountain and entering into this ten-year agreement, our information is preserved in line with our requirements, and is available to the community when needed.”

“The management of information goes far beyond document management and document archiving for compliance purposes, particularly in the oil and gas industry,” explains Iron Mountain Director, Phil Greenwood. “For example, the samples we store on behalf of TEP UK are used by them to decide where to direct their exploration and drilling efforts. This is why they invest in specialised facilities and services like ours which provide inspection rooms for core and sample analysis, and geological expertise to assist with the preparation, handling and preservation.”

Iron Mountain was selected by TEP UK following a competitive tender process, during which TEP UK was looking for a cost-effective information management partner.

Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE: IRM) is a global leader in information management services that help organisations to manage their information at every stage of the lifecycle, supporting easy access and regulatory compliance. Industry-leading security levels help protect against the risk of data breaches and associated reputational damage. In the UK, Iron Mountain offers records storage and management, scanning and digitising services, off-site data protection and secure destruction.
