SGI introduces modular platform

SGI has announced the introduction of SGI® Modular InfiniteStorage™, an integrated server and storage platform designed to provide Cloud and data storage customers with the maximum flexibility for compute and data management applications. Leveraging industry-leading density in an innovative, adaptable design, the core SGI Modular InfiniteStorage platform will be available as either SGI Modular InfiniteStorage Server (SGI MIS Server) or SGI Modular InfiniteStorage JBOD (SGI MIS JBOD) storage products, for wide-ranging, functional scalability in diverse data environments.

Date: 2 Feb 2012

SGI Modular InfiniteStorage is perfect for cloud computing and other IT storage management environments that require data and compute to be tightly coupled. This enables customers to pool processing and storage in the right proportions for greatest efficiency, and in precisely the manner they need to keep pace with the rapidly expanding data and application demands of their business.

Form meets function in SGI Modular InfiniteStorage, with an innovative chassis architecture designed to adapt to the real-world demands of today’s data centers. Extreme density is achieved with the introduction of modular drive bricks. This breakthrough design enables each of the bricks to be loaded with either nine 3.5 inch SAS or SATA drives, or 18 2.5 inch SAS or SSD drives. As a storage server, SGI MIS Server includes eight drive bricks and two motherboards, for up to 216TB and four 1.8 to 2.9 GHz processors in a single 4U server chassis. The modularity of the system means that the same platform could be configured for extreme IOPs applications, for example, by substituting the 72 3.5-inch disk drives with 144 SSDs. For additional capacity, an SGI MIS JBOD can be added, which packs nine drive bricks for up to 243TB of disk capacity into each additional 4U enclosure.
When built into SGI’s D-Rack cabinet configuration, up to 2.37 PB of capacity and up to forty discrete processors can be supplied within a single standard 19 inch rack footprint. This density enables IT organizations to reclaim valuable floor space and reduce power and cooling costs, all with the precise specifications that they need for their unique business applications.

“The SGI Modular InfiniteStorage platform is designed to couple very dense storage and compute capabilities in an adaptable platform, to give cloud and other storage IT customers important new choices for tuning and growing the system to meet their specific requirements,” said Steve Conway, IDC research vice president for HPC. “The SGI Modular InfiniteStorage platform aims to allow IT managers to design customized solutions based on standards-based components.”

As a consistent innovator in some of the world’s most challenging data environments, SGI has leveraged this experience to make SGI Modular InfiniteStorage a preferred choice in the datacenter. The SGI MIS chassis includes usability features such as a unique rail design that enables hot-swappable components to be easily accessed from either the front or rear of the unit. This simple feature not only makes the system much easier to service, but it significantly reduces the strain on cables and connectors that is a frequent source of fragility in other large systems that require the unit to be pulled out entirely to access individual components.

“SGI has always been focused on building products that push the envelope to help customers solve very large data problems,” said Jose Reinoso, vice president of storage engineering at SGI. “SGI Modular InfiniteStorage is a solution that enables them to have exactly the system they need today, with the ability to scale and adapt it to where their business takes them tomorrow.”
