Tandberg Data announces LTO-5 half height external tape drive with Fibre Channel connectivity

New LTO-5 HH FC tape drive simplifies archiving and workflow tasks for video, entertainment, broadcasting, imaging and military applications.

Date: 1 Feb 2012

Tandberg Data has announced the availability of the industry’s first LTO-5 Half Height (HH) Fibre Channel (FC) external desktop tape drive. Capable of backing up 3 terabytes* of data on a single cartridge in less than three hours, the new LTO-5 HH FC external tape drive provides a highly cost effective means of storing large video files, managing workflow within the production environment, and simplifying archiving tasks. Other users with high-performance requirements also will benefit from this easy and inexpensive way to edit, store and archive data.

“Tandberg Data’s introduction of the LTO-5 HH FC tape drive provides customers, especially Mac users, with a simple and affordable solution to meet digital workflow and archiving needs,” said Randy Kerns, industry analyst with Evaluator Group. “A wider range of users can now leverage the speed and portability of LTO tape for data transfer and off-site archival purposes.”

“At less than 2.5 cents per gigabyte stored*, LTO-5 tape remains the least expensive and most reliable means of archiving large amounts of data,” said Marije Gould, vice president of marketing for Tandberg Data. “Now a wider range of users can more easily take advantage of LTO tape technology for the digital content workflow used in the media and entertainment industries as well as for video surveillance, medical imaging, military, CAD/CAM, e-discovery and seismic applications. For Mac users, the Fibre Channel interface allows them to edit content on their workstations and move it directly to tape for offsite storage or transportation to another location.”

The new tape drive also supports LTFS (Linear Tape File System) for Mac and Linux, which allows the tape drive to operate like a hard disk for direct access without the need for tape backup software. The new desktop LTO-5 tape drive simplifies data protection operations and streamlines workflow tasks for high-capacity applications, such as digital content for post-production and film editing in the video, entertainment and broadcast industries.

Quick Look -- Tandberg Data LTO-5 HH FC external tape drive features:
